THINK is coming!

On July 5th 2019, the Joint Science Conference (GWK) approved funding for a new research facility at the Ruhr University Bochum. THINK (Center for Theoretical and Integrative Neuroscience and Cognitive Science) will be home to 100 scientific and technical staff, and house cutting-edge research equipment such as, 9.4 T animal MRI, 3 T human MRI, multiphoton microscope and a life-cell imaging microscope. THINK will facilitate a novel integrative and interdisciplinary approach to understanding cognition and the underlying neural mechanisms. The initiative is coordinated by the INI's Sen Cheng (deputy speaker) and includes further principal investigators of the INI: Dirk Jancke, Gregor Schöner and Laurenz Wiskott. The full press release from the Ruhr University Bochum is available here (German only).

The Institut für Neuroinformatik (INI) is a central research unit of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. We aim to understand the fundamental principles through which organisms generate behavior and cognition while linked to their environments through sensory systems and while acting in those environments through effector systems. Inspired by our insights into such natural cognitive systems, we seek new solutions to problems of information processing in artificial cognitive systems. We draw from a variety of disciplines that include experimental approaches from psychology and neurophysiology as well as theoretical approaches from physics, mathematics, electrical engineering and applied computer science, in particular machine learning, artificial intelligence, and computer vision.
