Machine learning methods are nowadays widespread also outside computer science, e.g., in many areas of science and engineering. They are particularly successful where data are abundant and exact modeling is difficult or impossible, and human expertise is expensive, inexact, or difficult to formalize. Machine learning algorithm build models directly from data. This contrasts with manual modeling. The process is highly automated and does not require deep domain specific expertise.
The Institute for Neural Computation (Institut für Neuroinformatik, INI) offers general advice on machine learning application problems. The service is restricted to members of the Ruhr University Bochum. It ranges from single session meetings, for example for Bachelor and Master thesis projects, to long term collaborations targeted at projects or publications.
