Mathematics for Theoretical Biologists

Lecture and Tutorial
Prof. Dr. Laurenz Wiskott (with Niko Wilbert)
HU logo

This course is designed for students interested in theoretical biology, but might be useful also for students from other disciplines, since there is very little explicit reference to biology. It covers some advances topics of mathematics, such as Hilbert spaces, Bayesian theory, or nonlinear differential equations, which are particularly useful in modelling. It does not cover techniques required for data analysis. Much emphasis will be put on getting an intuition for the mathematical concepts and on practicing the methods with exercises, which the students present in the tutorial.

The course will be given in English if there are non-German speaking participants.

Tutorials take place 11:30-13:00 and lectures 15:00-16:30 in the seminar room of the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience Berlin. There will be no tutrial on Monday the 29.9.

This is the tentative plan for this course but open for discussion. Please check this web page (http://www.neuroinformatik.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/PEOPLE/wiskott/Teaching/2008-WS-MathForTheoreticalBiologists/) occasionally for changes, in particular in the dates.

It is also possible to attend just one week.
